Bereavement

Bereavement and the accompanying grief come in many guises for barristers.

Obviously, it includes the death of a beloved family member or friend. But also, it can be associated with retirement or a major change in lifestyle caused by illness or disability.

Grief is a natural experience that helps in processing the pain of the loss and assists in the healing.

We all suffer from the following stages, not necessarily in the same order, to the same severity, or over the same period of time.

  • Shock
  • Denial
  • Anger
  • Depression
  • Acceptance

Rather than a steady decline in grief, we tend to fluctuate over time and in “waves” of improvement.
