A major cause of burnout and stress among barristers occurs when they are burdened with more work than they can reasonably handle within a specific time frame. This can lead to a range of negative consequences, including decreased productivity and adverse effects on physical and mental health.
Sometimes, self-imposed major reasons include an excessive number of responsibilities or cases, unrealistic deadlines, and a lack of resources or support.
Signs of overload include:
- Difficulty in concentrating
- Poor memory, problem-solving, or decision making
- Anxiety
- Tiredness
- Overly self-critical
- Difficulties in sleeping
- Missing deadlines
- Making an increasing number of mistakes
Setting clear goals and plans and learning to say “no” are initial steps in a self-care strategy to avoid and respond to work overload
